Construction - Trade Skills

Mission Statement

In the construction/trade skills department we aim to equip learners with practical skills which can be applied to a range of vocational activities. We cover bricklaying, carpentry, painting and decorating and plumbing throughout the learners’ time at DLC; which is aimed to prepare learners for trade courses offered at local colleges. It is the aim that learners who go on to engage with further education in areas of the construction industry will be equipped with knowledge and confidence to access the courses with prior experience handling tools, undertaking trade specific activities and using trade specific terminology.

Outcomes

Learners at DLC will be offered a range of modules including bricklaying, carpentry, painting and decorating and plumbing. While completing their work, instructors will document their progression to assemble a portfolio of evidence which can be presented to further education establishments such as college, or used as Recognition of Prior Experience in interviews. Certification is offered through the AQA Unit Awards scheme. Where possible, learners will get to choose projects which incorporate elements of the AQA Unit Awards, allowing them to develop their skills and interests in their own way.
