Mission Statement

At Dorchester Learning Centre, our aim is to ensure every student feels safe, supported and ready to learn within Mechanics. We provide engaging and practical learning opportunities that enable students to develop confidence, independence and essential technical skills with tools and/ or their riding skills on one of our motorcycles. Students learn about vehicle systems, maintenance and safe working practices while developing problem-solving and teamwork skills. Through accessible and hands-on experiences, we support students to make meaningful progress and prepare them for future education, apprenticeships and employment within the automotive and engineering sectors. Students are entered for appropriate qualifications such as AQA that identifies their individual skills to help them achieve their dreams and aspirations whilst having fun!

Intent

At Dorchester Learning Centre, the intent of the Mechanics curriculum is to re-engage learners through practical, hands-on experiences within a supportive and personalised environment. Many of our students arrive with disrupted educational experiences, gaps in learning and low confidence in their academic abilities. Mechanics provides an opportunity for students to develop skills and knowledge in a new and engaging context as there are not many schools left in the country who teach mechanics or motor skills. Our curriculum outcomes are to:

• Develop practical skills and an understanding of vehicle systems, maintenance and safe working practices.

• Promote confidence, resilience, independence and problem-solving skills through real-life mechanical tasks and their developing their riding skills.

• Encourage teamwork, communication and responsibility within a safe and structured workshop environment.

• Support students to gain appropriate qualifications and prepare for further education, apprenticeships and employment opportunities within the automotive, engineering and vocational sectors.

• Develop an understanding of how mechanical knowledge and technical skills are applied in everyday life and a wide range of careers.

• Support pupils' social, emotional and mental health needs through engaging, purposeful and achievable learning experiences.

We aim to show all learners that mechanics is accessible, relevant and achievable, regardless of their starting point. Through practical learning and positive relationships, students are encouraged to develop the skills, confidence and aspirations needed to succeed in education, employment and adult life.
